Officer responded and took a look at the computer. There were several pop-ups claiming that his apple computer had been compromised and encouraging to call a number for apple support. The pop up (along with an audio file) warned to not shut off or restart the computer or risk losing critical files/information. Officer explained that this is a “pop-up scam” used to try and get people to call the fake number and give out financial information under the guise of buying anti-theft/anti-virus software. The officer restarted the computer and made sure the pop-ups had been properly cleared. No information or money was given away.
-12:52PM. Officer took a report of a scam in the 300 block of S 1st St. The reporting party received a call from someone claiming to be with Wells Fargo stating that one of their accounts had approximately $5,000 accidentally deposited into it. The caller then transferred the reporting party to another caller claiming to be a representative with the Department of Homeland Security. At this point the reporting party started to question the validity of the call and went to their bank in Ames to verify and fix any issues. While speaking with the reporting party’s spouse we discovered that the $5,000 had actually just been moved from another one of their accounts to make it look like there was a surplus in the other. No money had been stolen or deposited, just moved around. The reporting party was encouraged to have their accounts changed with their bank.

-1:45PM. Officer took a report of a scam in the 500 block of SW 4th St. The reporting party explained that she had received a text message claiming that her APPLE ID had been compromised. The reporting party called the listed “customer support” number and the man who answered told her she would need to go to Walgreens in Boone to buy a card that would help re-activate her account. The man explained she would need to go to Walgreens because there wasn’t a certified Apple store anywhere near. The reporting party questioned the validity of the call so she went to the Boone County Law Enforcement Center where a dispatcher informed her it was a scam and encouraged her to hang up on the caller. The reporting party had given the last 4 digits of a debit and credit card but had already called the banks and had those cards cancelled. There was no loss of money.

AN ARREST WITHOUT DISPOSITION IS
NOT AN INDICATION OF GUILT
***NOTICE***
Our department took multiple scam calls this past week. A common element in these calls was the person on the other line requested that they stay on the phone the entire time and did not want to be hung up on. Scammers commonly do this to ensure that the person they are trying to scam follows their directions and does not contact an authority figure. If you find yourself in this situation, just hang up on the person and contact law enforcement or your bank to verify if it’s a scam or not.
***OPEN BURNING CLOSED***
Open burning ended on May 31st. The next period of open burning will start October 1st. As always, recreational fires and grilling are exempt from this.
